The yield glossary.

Plain-language definitions for the terms behind savings, CDs, bonds, dividends, and investment returns.

A

Accrued interest

Interest accumulated since the last payment or calculation date but not yet paid. For a bond trade, accrued interest can affect the total settlement amount. Read the quote and transaction details rather than assuming the displayed price includes every cash amount.

Explore this concept : Accrued interest

Annual percentage yield (APY)

An annualized deposit-yield measure that reflects compounding under specified assumptions. It differs from a nominal annual interest rate. A short-term deposit can display an annual APY without paying an entire year of interest during its shorter term.

Explore this concept : Annual percentage yield (APY)

Annualization

Expressing a rate or result on an annual basis. The method, day count, and treatment of compounding matter. Turning a short-period result into an annualized figure does not guarantee that the same opportunity can be repeated for a full year.

Explore this concept : Annualization

B

Basis point

One hundredth of one percentage point. A change from 4.00% to 4.25% is 25 basis points, or 0.25 percentage points. This language describes an absolute difference between rates, not a 25% change in the amount earned.

Explore this concept : Basis point

Bond

A debt security with issuer obligations and terms governing payments, maturity, and other features. Bond income and market value can be affected by credit, interest-rate, liquidity, and other risks. Read the specific security documents rather than relying on the category label.

Explore this concept : Bond

C

Call provision

A security term permitting the issuer to redeem under specified conditions before the stated maturity date. Calls can affect the expected payment schedule and reinvestment choices. A callable bond therefore requires examining its call terms as well as its maturity.

Explore this concept : Call provision

Capital gain or loss

The difference between the relevant cost basis and the value realized on a sale, subject to the accounting or tax context in use. In a simplified educational return example, a price change is distinct from cash income received during the holding period.

Explore this concept : Capital gain or loss

Certificate of deposit (CD)

A deposit product commonly associated with a specified term. A conventional bank CD may impose an early-withdrawal penalty and have renewal rules. Direct-bank and brokered arrangements can differ, so read the product documents and identify the actual issuing institution.

Explore this concept : Certificate of deposit (CD)

CD ladder

A schedule that spreads deposits among different maturity dates. Each rung retains its own term and access conditions. A ladder can organize maturity decisions but does not guarantee a higher overall return or remove uncertainty about future renewal rates.

Explore this concept : CD ladder

Compounding

The process by which interest retained in an account can itself earn interest. An APY already incorporates a compounding assumption. Calculations should distinguish retained interest from interest withdrawn or paid into a separate account.

Explore this concept : Compounding

Coupon rate

A bond’s stated annual coupon amount expressed relative to its face value. It is not generally the same as current yield when the market price differs from face value, and it does not by itself capture a gain or loss at sale or maturity.

Explore this concept : Coupon rate

Credit risk

The risk that an issuer or borrower will not meet obligations as agreed. A yield quote does not remove this uncertainty. Consider the issuer, the security’s terms, and the possibility of payment disruption rather than assuming all income instruments have identical protection.

Explore this concept : Credit risk

Current yield

For a conventional coupon bond, annual coupon income divided by the price used in the calculation. It leaves out a capital gain or loss and is not equivalent to yield to maturity or a complete estimate of realized total return.

Explore this concept : Current yield

D

Deposit insurance

Protection for qualifying deposits at an insured institution within applicable limits and account ownership rules. It is not protection against investment market losses. Institution identity, ownership category, and combined balances can matter when determining coverage.

Explore this concept : Deposit insurance

Dividend

A distribution made to shareholders when declared under the issuer’s arrangements. Amounts and frequency can change, and a past payment does not guarantee a future one. A dividend contributes cash flow but does not ensure a positive overall investment return.

Explore this concept : Dividend

Dividend yield

A dividend amount expressed relative to a share price. Specify whether the payment is trailing, forward-looking, recurring, or inclusive of special distributions. A rising displayed yield can result from a falling price rather than a growing dividend.

Explore this concept : Dividend yield

Duration

A bond measure associated with the timing of cash flows and, in modified form, sensitivity to changes in yield. It is not simply a synonym for maturity. The appropriate duration measure and assumptions depend on the instrument and its features.

Explore this concept : Duration

F

Face value

The stated principal amount of a bond or bill used in its contractual payment terms. A security’s purchase price can differ from face value. Keep face value, cost, coupon payments, and maturity proceeds separate when explaining its yield.

Explore this concept : Face value

Fixed rate

A rate agreed for a specified period under a product’s terms. A fixed quoted rate does not imply that early access is free, that all balances are insured, or that an investment’s market value cannot change. Product structure remains important.

Explore this concept : Fixed rate

Forward dividend yield

A yield based on assumed future or annualized dividend payments rather than only the historical record. The underlying estimate may not be realized. Identify the assumed payment, price date, and treatment of special dividends before comparing it with another yield.

Explore this concept : Forward dividend yield

G

Grace period

A defined window under an account’s terms for specified actions around maturity or renewal. The duration, actions allowed, and consequences of missing the window are product-specific. Record the actual dates and the institution’s procedure instead of assuming a universal rule.

Explore this concept : Grace period

H

High-yield savings account

A savings account marketed with an emphasis on its yield. The label alone does not define fees, balance tiers, transfer rules, or coverage. A variable APY may change after opening, so the account disclosure is essential to the comparison.

Explore this concept : High-yield savings account

Holding-period return

The result over the specific period being measured, rather than necessarily a year. A simplified return can combine income received and the change in asset value relative to the starting amount. Cash-flow timing and reinvestment require consistent treatment in more complex calculations.

Explore this concept : Holding-period return

I

Inflation

An increase in a measure of prices over time. It is relevant to purchasing power: a balance can grow in dollars while buying less than expected. An educational real-return example should state its inflation assumption rather than presenting it as a forecast.

Explore this concept : Inflation

Interest-rate risk

The sensitivity of an investment’s value or outcome to changes in interest rates. An individual bond sold before maturity may realize a different price from its purchase price. A fixed coupon does not mean that the security’s market price is fixed.

Explore this concept : Interest-rate risk

L

Liquidity

The ability to obtain usable cash when needed, with attention to timing, price, and costs. Liquidity is not identical to deposit coverage or a high quoted yield. Review the actual transfer, redemption, withdrawal, or sale process for the specific product.

Explore this concept : Liquidity

M

Maturity

The contractual date at which a deposit term or security reaches its stated endpoint, subject to its terms. Maturity, settlement, renewal, and receipt of spendable funds can be different events. Keep a calendar of the relevant dates for a time-specific goal.

Explore this concept : Maturity

N

Nominal interest rate

The stated annual interest rate before the compounding adjustment represented in APY. In a simplified monthly-compounding illustration, divide the nominal rate by twelve before applying monthly periods. Do not use APY as that nominal input and compound it again.

Explore this concept : Nominal interest rate

P

Payout ratio

A measure relating dividends to a specified earnings or cash-flow figure. Definitions and business models vary, so the denominator and period matter. One ratio cannot establish dividend sustainability on its own or be interpreted identically across every type of issuer.

Explore this concept : Payout ratio

R

Real return

A return expressed after adjusting for a stated inflation measure. In a simplified single-period calculation, divide one plus nominal return by one plus inflation and subtract one. The usefulness of the result depends on the assumptions and what costs have already been included.

Explore this concept : Real return

Reinvestment risk

Uncertainty about the return available when income or maturity proceeds are invested again. A CD ladder or coupon schedule does not lock in every future renewal opportunity. Separate a rate fixed today from a rate merely assumed for a later period.

Explore this concept : Reinvestment risk

T

Total return

A measure combining income and the change in the investment’s value over a defined period under specified assumptions. Check whether reinvestment and expenses are included. Do not add distributions again to a figure that already counts them.

Explore this concept : Total return

Trailing dividend yield

A yield calculated using a defined historical payment period and a stated share price. Historical dividends may include payments that will not recur. Distinguish the lookback period and special distributions before treating the figure as a guide to future income.

Explore this concept : Trailing dividend yield

Treasury bill

A U.S. government marketable security sold at discount or par and paying face value at maturity. For a discount purchase, the difference between cost and face value is the interest at maturity. A bill is not an FDIC-insured bank deposit.

Explore this concept : Treasury bill

V

Variable rate

A rate that can change under the product’s terms. A current savings APY is not a promise that the same rate will apply for the full future holding period. An illustration using a constant rate should make that simplifying assumption explicit.

Explore this concept : Variable rate

Y

Yield to call

A bond yield calculated for a specified call scenario using the price and scheduled payments through that call date under stated assumptions. It matters where an issuer has a redemption right. It is not a promise that a call will occur.

Explore this concept : Yield to call

Yield to maturity (YTM)

The rate that equates a bond’s purchase price with its scheduled cash flows through maturity under the calculation’s assumptions. Actual realized return can differ because of payment changes, costs, reinvestment conditions, or an early sale. Read the yield label and assumptions together.

Explore this concept : Yield to maturity (YTM)

Yield to worst

A quoted measure comparing specified maturity and eligible call scenarios, typically identifying the lowest yield among them under the calculation conventions. It does not measure every possible loss or eliminate default risk. “Worst” here is a technical label, not an absolute guarantee.
